Republic of Georgian state video
Here's an actual news video of Georgia President Saakashvili conferring with another world leader during Russia's 2008 armed attacks on the small nation.A beer and a boar

This is one of the famous "beer drinking boars" of St. Croix. Actually, they're partial to non-alcoholic O'Doul's brews, but they do guzzle a bunch of them -- and they love posing for pictures.I found paying $1 a can for the beer a bit exorbitant, but when in St. Croix ... . Considering this part of the American Virgin Islands is one of the Caribbean's least attractive patches of ground, buying drinks for pigs wasn't so bad.

'Water, water everywhere ...

... and not a drop to drink."That line from "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834) came to mind on Labor Day weekend Sunday afternoon when I stopped to gaze at the Cohoes Falls in the little Albany County, NY, city of Cohoes and found someone with a much better view.
A lone bicyclist left his wheels close to shore (see background when you double-click on the image to enlarge it) and somehow managed to make his way to the edge of the falls where he sat down and looked around. He also outwaited me. I presume he got back safely.

Gas price war!

William M. Dowd photos
In the summer of '08, this set of gasoline prices on opposite sides of Route 9 in Columbia County, NY, caused a lot of brake-stomping, neck-swiveling and jaw-dropping.All for naught, however.
The then-low (how times have changed!) prices were posted on the marquee of a gas station that had been closed for a year or more.
Actually, the prices shown on the blowup (left) of the Sunoco station reflect what amountrf to a bargain in that part of the country in those days.• Return to Dowd's Guides home page.
